Arriving by Air

  • Arrival Airport: Kotoka International Airport (ACC)
  • Travel Documents: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Ghana, officials will check for it upon arrival.
  • Visa Requirements: Visitors from the U.S. need an entry visa. Check with your nearest Ghanaian embassy or consulate for specific requirements. It's best to secure your visa early to avoid delays or extra fees.

Transportation

  • Taxis: Taxis are readily available outside the airport. Be sure to agree on the fare before starting your journey.
  • Uber and Bolt: Popular ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt operate in Accra. Be sure to download these apps prior to your arrival. While you can pay by card on these apps, most drivers strongly prefer cash.
  • Airport Shuttle: Some hotels offer airport shuttle services. Check with your hotel for availability and rates.

Additional Information

  • Currency: The local currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). While ATMs are widely available, it's a good idea to carry some cash. Debit and ATM cards are accepted at most places.
  • SIM Cards: For unlocked phones, you can buy a local SIM card at the airport or in the city. We recommend Vodafone or MTN. You can also check with your phone provider for international plans—like T-Mobile's 15-Day International Pass, which gives you 5G data without needing to get a SIM card.
  • Travel Essentials: Bring a portable fan to stay cool, as it gets hot in Ghana! Additionally, pack high SPF sunscreen, a power adapter (British-style three-pin plugs), portable chargers, light and breathable fabrics, and comfortable shoes.
